How to photograph a puppy

Our first attempt trying to photograph Jasper as a puppy.

Ever tried to photograph a puppy? Here is a tried and tested method for capturing those perfect moments with your new friend.

  1. Remove camera from box and turn on.
  2. Remove camera box from puppy’s mouth and throw it in recycling.
  3. Remove puppy from recycling and brush shredded cardboard from muzzle.
  4. Choose suitable background for photo.
  5. Mount camera on tripod and focus.
  6. Find puppy and remove dirty sock from mouth.
  7. Place puppy in pre-focused spot and return to camera.
  8. Run after puppy and place in pre-focused spot, then return to camera.
  9. Forget about the spot and crawl after puppy on knees.
  10. Focus with one hand and fend off puppy with other hand.
  11. Get cloth and clean nose print from lens.

 


  1. Chase puppy to retrieve cloth.
  2. Put magazines back on coffee table and put puppy back in front of camera.
  3. Try to get puppy’s attention by squeaking toy over your head.
  4. Replace glasses and check camera for damage.
  5. Jump up in time to catch your puppy relieving themselves on the pre-focused spot.
  6. Say “No, outside”, despite it being too late.
  7. Clean up mess.
  8. Pour whisky.
  9. Sit in chair, enjoy whisky, and resolve to complete puppy preschool before trying again.
